Window sealing as moisture protection
We all know that windows protect us from rain and snow, even from insects. However, cracks can appear around window frames on a house of any age. The cause may be the settling of the house, which creates cracks in the plaster or loosens the mounted windows. In both cases, cracks around windows or doors are not good, they cause drafts and penetration of moisture into the interior walls, around the window frame, and above all into the house. With the penetration of moisture, the cracks progress even further, which leads to the penetration of even more moisture into the interior, which creates mold and discomfort. Sealing windows, ie filling cracks around windows and doors is a fairly short and simple repair, so there is no reason to delay it.
How can we seal the windows ourselves?
The simplest option for sealing windows, provided that there are smaller cracks, is with the help of sealing acrylic mass. The white sealant is in the tube that we attach to the gun. Before starting the application of the sealing compound, clean the area around the window pane, on which we will apply the sealing compound, with a brush. Then we cut off the nozzle on the tube at an angle and direct it into the crack. We apply with a light movement. We apply the sealant to the entire surface where the wall and the window or door frame meet, and not just to the place where there is a crack. If we apply the sealant only in short strokes, there is a greater chance that it will come off after a while. The applied sealant must be smooth and evenly applied, if it is not, run a moistened finger along the applied mass to smooth and flatten it. Let the sealing compound dry, then paint it depending on the need.
What are the window sealing options?
There are other different options for sealing windows. The range is very wide, from self-adhesive foam seals to silicone and acrylic rubber seals. The self-adhesive foam seal is very quick and easy to process. However, it often survives only one winter. Frequent opening and closing of the window causes the foam to break down. This of course also affects the performance of the seal. For example, acrylic is more complex to process, but this material adapts to the window frame if applied correctly. Thus, it is formed into an appropriate form that will fully perform its function. Why is window sealing necessary?
Window sealing If your window is not airtight, of course air will enter your room. This is especially noticeable in winter, when you want to sit at home in a warm room. If you now increase the heating, you have chosen the wrong solution. Thus you only incur additional costs and use firewood that is not endlessly available. The best solution is to seal the window. However, there is another benefit to good window sealing. Namely, the penetration of noise into the living space has been reduced. You will notice this especially if you live in a city or on a busy street.
Window check
First of all, check if the window frame fits well enough on the opening and if there is a draft somewhere at the junction of the frame and the structure. You can determine this very easily by bringing a light fabric near the frame, and the draft and air flow can often be felt on the skin. If necessary, perform the sealing and eventual filling of cavities yourself. You can do this with pur foam or a special filling, and the remains of the sealing material after the work is simply removed with a file. You can perform sealing from the inside and outside of the window. If you live on a higher floor in a multi-story building, be careful when sealing the cracks on the outside of the window. The next step you can take is to check the hinges and locks on the window. Sometimes these elements are loose or simply damaged from use and years of wear and tear, so it is simply necessary to replace them. You can also do this yourself, and you can find new locks or hinges in any specialized store. The cost of these elements is really low so it is worth investing in new ones.
