Window insulation

What is the benefit of hiring a window insulation specialist?

If the window is no longer sealing well, it can be for several reasons: the window itself can no longer meet current standards or the seal is old or cracked and must be replaced. As a last resort, of course, window insulation is much cheaper. A good craftsman will know exactly what to do and when. In addition, your window is guaranteed to achieve maximum insulation only if it is performed by an expert. Especially with energy-saving windows, you shouldn”t try to re-insulate them yourself.

What should you pay attention to when insulating windows?

When installing the window in the frame, the legal regulations for window insulation must be observed: the mere use of construction foam is not sufficient for insulation, as it does not expand and therefore does not adapt to temperature changes. An expandable sealant must be used.

Why is window insulation necessary?

Window insulationWindow insulation If you feel a cold draft near the window, it”s time to insulate the window. If you are not sure, you can also do the candle test: keep the lit candle in a place where you can feel the cool air. If the flames lean away from the window, it”s definitely time for repairs. Much valuable heating energy is wasted and heating costs rise. Well-insulated windows save up to 30% of heating energy. Optimally insulated windows not only keep the heat inside and the cold outside, but also act as noise protection and reduce the risk of mold.

What preparations should be made before window insulation?

Before applying the sealant or sealing strips, the remaining paint must be removed and the corresponding window area must be free of dust, dirt and grease. In addition, the surface to be processed (with wooden windows) must be well polished so that the insulation of the window is performed in the best way.

What tools and materials are needed for window insulation?

In the case of wooden windows, the damaged paint should be removed first. You can do this very easily with the help of a putty knife. Then clean the area thoroughly with a brush. Whether wooden, metal or plastic windows, all must be cleaned of dirt and grease before insulation. All you need is a bucket of warm water, a cloth and some grease-dissolving washing-up liquid. Stubborn dirt can be removed with a brush or a stronger cleaner. It is important that the surface to be processed does not contain grease and dirt, so that the glue or silicone adheres well. Wooden windows must also be polished with fine sandpaper. Finally, apply insulating tape or insulating compound (with a spray gun) to the edges and corners of the window. Liquid silicone or acrylic must be allowed to dry for up to 24 hours. Therefore, a special foil is placed over the fresh insulation. This not only prevents the insulation from sticking to the window frame, but also ensures that the compound is well distributed in all the nooks and crannies.

What variants are there for window insulation?

There are different insulating materials for windows. The easiest way is to use self-adhesive sealing tapes such as PVC tapes, which are very easy to attach thanks to the self-adhesive underside. The downside, however, is that the tape wears out when the window is opened and closed. An alternative to tapes is a self-adhesive rubber seal. It is most effective to use a liquid sealant such as silicone or acrylic as insulation, because it penetrates all cracks and thus insulates better than self-adhesive tapes. In the case of old or single-glazed windows, in addition to insulating the window frame, you can use special window films to better insulate your windows. They insulate the window glass and reduce the formation of condensation on it.
