Preparations for switch replacement
Before starting to replace the switch, it is necessary to turn off the power supply of the light source. We will do this by first turning on the switch (the light is on) and then we will turn out the cartridge of the corresponding fuse (if it is an old type of fuse), that is, move the lever to the zero position if it is an automatic fuse. If the bulb goes out, this is sufficient proof that there is no voltage on the switch wires and that replacement can be started. The switch replacement can now be approached. First, use a screwdriver to unscrew the two screws located on the front side of the single-pole switch, which will allow the switch to be removed from the wall.
Before replacing the switch, remove the old switch
Before replacing the switch, it is an opportunity to check again whether there is voltage on the conductors. For this, a tester, a test lamp, a ligner or whatever you like to call that instrument that resembles a screwdriver is used. Touch its tip to one of the screws, keeping your thumb on the metal part, at the opposite end of the probe. Repeat this with the other screw and when you are sure the tester lamp is off (meaning there is no voltage) unscrew the screws and release the leads. With old single-pole switches, it was a rule that the phase conductor was connected to a smaller screw. With the new single pole switches the screws are the same so you don”t have to worry about that.
Installing a new switch
With new types of single-pole switches, the cover is held by plastic It should be removed using a lever. On the side of the body of the single-pole switch or on the front side (depending on the type of switch) you will notice the openings where the conductors should be mounted. For this type of single-pole switch, there should be two of them. Insert the cables into the mentioned holes and tighten them well with the appropriate screws. Once you”ve done that, push the body of the single-pole switch into the socket on the wall so that the front of the single-pole switch is flush with the wall. Make sure the single-pole switch is horizontal and then tighten the screws, which will secure the switch. All that remains is to mount the decorative mask held by the plastic clips.
