Router Setup

How complicated is router setup?

Setting up your router may seem like a tedious and difficult job, but it”s actually a lot easier than you think. All you need to know is where which cable goes and then configure the new settings. The first thing you need to do is unplug the modem you got from the provider, or bought, and then connect it to the router. Take the ethernet cable, which probably came with the router, insert one end into the modem and the other into the WAN port of the router. The WAN port should be labeled “Internet” and look the same as the LAN port next to it. However, sometimes this port can be separated from the others on some routers and is always a different color to make it stand out. The next step is to turn on the modem again and wait a few minutes for it to configure itself, after which you need to do the same with the router. Once that”s done, grab another ethernet cable and connect your computer to the router.

Router configuration

In order to complete the setup of the router, proper configuration is also necessary. Open a browser on your computer and visit the router”s configuration page. The site should be listed in the instructions or on a label somewhere on the device, but in most cases you should enter http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 in the search field. After that you need to log in. The data for this is also most likely in the manual or somewhere on the device, but in most cases the username is admin and the password is password. When you log in, a window will appear that will guide you through the rest of the setup steps. In them, you will set a password, username, choose security protocols and the like. And that”s it, your router is set up and ready to go!

Do we need to restart the router from time to time?

Router SetupRouter Setup By setting up the router, you have done everything you need to make it work, but after a while it is necessary to restart it. By restarting it, you will not only speed it up, but you will do another very important thing for its security. Just as it”s recommended to shut down your computer regularly to make it work better, you should do the same with your router – and that”s something that in most cases is a real rarity. Experts recommend that we restart the router every few months because that way we can fix certain problems with the Internet connection – from its lack to speeding it up. This should also be the first thing to do if something is not right. Internet service providers give each device a temporary IP address, which can change over time. If your router doesn”t catch the change, your internet may become slower. In addition to improving the Internet, rebooting the router is also an important security step. By shutting down and restarting the device, it is possible to usurp any malware that may have hit it. Restarting is a simple step that you can do yourself if you have problems with the Internet, or network security.

Problems with router setup

You bought a new router, and now you have the job of plugging it in and setting up the router. The initial step is to connect the LAN cable from the modem, coaxial, DSL or FiOS, assigned to you by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to the router, (the WAN signal lamp flashes if you have a signal), as well as the router”s power supply. Manufacturers deliver a SETUP CD with each of their devices, that is, an installation CD that guides you through the installation of your device. In this way, the key parameters are automatically adjusted, and if you are not very pro level with network devices, this is the recommended way for you. You can receive the Internet signal from the router wirelessly or via a network LAN cable. Confirmation that WiFi (wireless broadcasting) is turned on on your router is the flashing of the WLAN indicator. If WiFi is turned on, it is necessary to set a WPA or WPA2 PSK password to prevent unauthorized use of your network.

What to do when the device does not see your network?

During the router setup you did by booting the CD, you must have been asked for your network name, which other devices will see and which you have selected and entered. The name of that network on the router is the SSID and it broadcasts it to the environment as a signal name. If you have accessed the router one of the options available with the router is to set it to broadcast the name of your network (Network Name Broadcasting) or not to do so, so your network will not be visible. For security reasons, you can also make your network invisible, but it is assumed that you have previously set up all your devices to receive the signal. If it happened that your network name disappeared, you must do the following: Set your computer or other device to connect to the router even when it is not broadcasting a network name. Select the option “Connect even if the network is not broadcasting its name (SSID).”
