Roof insulation

Roof insulation – hire a professional?

The pitched roof is a part of the building that is unfairly neglected when it comes to energy saving, noise and fire protection. The roof structure is mostly exposed to atmospheric influences (rain, snow, wind, sun…), therefore it is necessary to intervene, that is, to insulate our pitched roof with quality. Roof insulation is a complex procedure, so it is advisable to hire a professional for this job. Inadequate construction can cause additional problems if the insulation is not done professionally.

What should be considered when insulating the roof?

It is generally known that insufficiently good insulation of the roof dissipates energy through its envelope, but the fact that, in the largest percentage, this energy Since glass mineral wool has exceptional thermal properties, we recommend that this product be part of thermal insulation (together with stone mineral wool) that will provide pleasant comfort in your attic. Stone mineral wool is characterized by its high density, and thus its high absorption capacity and heat retention. This feature of stone mineral wool gives it an advantage over other thermal insulation materials, because it reduces the impact of high outside temperatures, thus preventing excessive heating in the summer.

What are the benefits of roof insulation?

Roof insulationRoof insulation When a fire breaks out, the roof structure is particularly vulnerable. Therefore, insulation materials, in addition to many other requirements, are also subject to a high degree of safety in terms of fire protection. Insulation materials made of glass and stone mineral wool have the highest fire reaction class – A1, which means they are non-combustible. The high melting point of stone wool material of over 1000°C offers the best safety in case of fire. The noise of airplanes, road traffic or from the neighboring construction site can affect the comfort of living in many ways. Stone mineral wool, as sound insulation, prevents the transmission of sound through construction parts. The reason lies in the fibrous structure of stone mineral wool.

What are the ways to insulate the roof from the outside?

The insulation of the roof is usually done from the inside, but it is often the case that the insulation of the pitched roof is also done from the outside. There are several reasons for this, and this procedure has numerous advantages. The insulation of the pitched roof from the outside is usually done when the insulation from the inside has already been installed, all the painting and final works have been completed, but there is a need to improve the quality of the insulation. Placing an additional layer of insulation on the outside is then a simpler and more efficient solution. In addition, the installation of insulation from the outside is resorted to when it is necessary to increase the thickness of the insulation, but not to reduce the available head space in the attic. This solution is often resorted to for aesthetic reasons, i.e. when you want to preserve the rustic appearance of the attic with visible rafters of the roof structure. Also, by placing the insulation on the upper side, a more homogeneous insulation barrier is obtained, without thermal bridges, that is, a zone of weaker insulation, where condensation can occur.

Insulation of flat roofs

Static loads of a flat roof, such as the weight of its own structure and the weight of snow, affect the dimensioning of the load-bearing structure of the roof. On the other hand, the dimensioning of the thermal insulation layer is affected by occasional mechanical loads on the roof during the installation phase or later maintenance of the roof surface. The key quality criterion is not only the surface load-bearing capacity of the insulation layer, but also the resistance to individual point loads. They occur at the places of mechanical fastening of the roof foil, as well as when walking on the roof. Although these are impassable flat roofs, occasional walking on the roof cannot be avoided, as the roof needs to be maintained. Likewise, there may be subsequent performance of works that require temporary use of that area.

Hydro insulation of the roof

Hydro isolation is achieved by drilling holes in the damaged part of the building and placing working and control injection packers in them. The exact number and schedule is determined separately for each project, and depends on the amount of water penetration, the elements being drilled and the material from which the element is made. Then, through the working packers under high pressure (up to 200 bar), the appropriate amount of gel is injected with special pumps in the direction from which the water penetrates into the interior of the building. The injection is carried out until the gel starts to come out of the control packers (holes), which ensures the complete sealing of all cracks and confirms that the water from the repaired part is permanently eliminated. The water is replaced by a waterproof gel that prevents the remaining possible effects of water or rain on that part of the building. It is important to note that the amount of gel that is injected, in principle, corresponds to the volume of water that is displaced. The mass remains permanently in a gel state, blocking the passage of water, which results in the successful elimination of water from damaged areas, and therefore in successful rehabilitation and preventive action against possible further water penetration.
