Damage to the sheet metal

Repairing damage to the bodywork or replacing damaged parts with new ones?

Those who want to restore the car”s bodywork to its original state, sometimes face repairs that can cost from a hundred to several hundred or even thousands of euros. The simplest thing is to replace the damaged parts with new ones, but hardly anyone has money for such a thing. Therefore, there are different methods of reparation, but in the end they are not cheap either, and in most cases the quality of reparation depends on numerous factors. Starting with the degree of damage to the bodywork, the quality of the bodywork, paint and varnish, as well as the age of the vehicle, because it is most difficult to work on old and already damaged vehicles.

Why should I repair sheet metal damage?

Paint damage quickly continues to chip or create a target for rust attack. Damage to the windows should also be repaired quickly, as the resistance, and therefore the stability of the entire car, can suffer. Extensive body damage is not only an excellent surface for rust to attack, but also compromises stability and safe driving. Therefore, any damage should be repaired as soon as possible.

What preparations are needed before repairing damage to the bodywork?

Before proceeding with the repair of bodywork damage, all involved body parts must be thoroughly cleaned. Metal, paint and glass can only be professionally repaired if the surface is completely free of grease, dust and dirt.

Repair of sheet metal damage using the ironing method

This is one of the basic and oldest methods used when repairing damaged sheet metal, and it is still used today. With the help of various hammers and shims, almost all damages can be corrected and returned to their original state, and the only problem is that with this somewhat rough method, the paint and varnish are often damaged, so it is necessary to paint the corrected part later. However, for more severe damage, this is the method that is still most often applied.

Repair of sheet metal damage using the gluing method

It is practiced on parts of damaged sheet metal such as the roof frame, pillars, edges and the like. As its name suggests, this method is performed using a special glue and tools, and its advantage, as in the case of the massaging method, is that it does not damage the vehicle”s varnish and paint. In this way, various indentations on those parts caused by hail, as well as damage caused by parking or a minor collision, can be corrected. The procedure is similar to the one applied with spot welding, but thanks to the fact that glue is used during it, the varnish and paint are not damaged.

Repair of damage to the sheet metal by the method of slight puncturing

This is a classic method for extracting dents that is still used today in more severe cases. It is similar to the gluing method, but in this case spot welding is used. The idea is to temporarily weld, i.e. punctuate, an electrode to the place of indentation, which later serves as a place of engagement during extraction. This method is used in cases of severe damage when it is already certain that the damaged part will have to be repaired, corrected and repainted. Although this method is sometimes used for hail damage, it is most commonly used when repairing damage caused by parking, collisions, and similar damage.
