Is it necessary to hire an expert to equip the workshop in the garage?
Anyone who would like to take the electrical installation of their garage into their own hands or would like to equip a workshop in the garage needs certain professional knowledge in order to successfully carry out electrical work. Many do-it-yourselfers are familiar with simple electrical connections and dare to do it, but if you have no experience connecting home wiring, you should seek advice from an electrician before connecting or operating anything.
What must we take into account when equipping a garage workshop?
Workshop in the garage When equipping a workshop in the garage, it is important to choose the right power cable. If you only want to work with 220 volt devices, a 3-wire cable with a cross-section of 2.5 mm is sufficient, for three-phase current you need a 5-wire power cable with a wire cross-section of 4 mm. You can bring one line from the house and connect it to the junction box. Cable ducts or installation pipes that are attached to the wall are the best for the correct installation of cables.
Advantages of a garage workshop
If you need a maximum of 3 to 4 consumers in your garage, you can connect this via a fuse in the house distributor and you do not need a separate sub-distribution. With a separate sub-distribution you have several advantages. On the one hand, you have an easy job if the fuse blows during operation, in the event of a fault, the FI switch of the sub-distribution is activated, and the house still has electricity. In addition, in your garage workshop, you can integrate new circuits or upgrade the three-phase connection at any time without the need for a new line from the home distributor.
What preparations should be made for equipping the workshop in the garage?
First, think carefully about what the future holds for your garage workshop, even if you don”t have many plans at the beginning, you may need more electricity later. If you must install a new supply line, measure the distance from the house distributor to where the sub-distributor or junction box should be. For the cables in the garage, you need the length to the various sockets and consumers, write down the purpose of the cable and the required length. If the power line is already in place, check the number of wires and their cross section. Mark all the lines with a felt-tip pen when you start wiring.
What is needed to equip a garage workshop?
If you want to install a sub-distribution with a three-phase connection, you need a power line with a five-wire cable. With sub-distribution for 230 volts, a three-core cable is sufficient. Lamps and other light bulbs are wired with two-wire cable, as are light switches. A three-phase power outlet requires a five-wire cable. You also need light switches, sockets, a junction box and a circuit breaker for each consumer circuit. For sub-distribution, you need a small distributor and a residual current circuit breaker instead of a junction box. If you just want to install a lamp and socket or an electric door operator in your garage, it is enough to bring the circuit from the nearest distributor in your house. If you are planning a workshop space in the garage or want to equip it for the future, it is better to install a separate sub-distributor.
