Bathroom insulation

The importance of bathroom insulation

Bathroom insulation is one of the most important items when renovating or building a new bathroom. Everyone is afraid that the bathroom will leak to the neighbors, especially when the shower cabin is flush with the floor. The truth is that this cannot happen if the waterproofing is installed properly. There are several types of waterproofing, and most often they are based on polymer cement intended for bathrooms, which can be one-component or two-component (two substances are mixed without using water). There are also polyurethane PU and epoxy finished waterproofings, which are used less often because these insulations require exceptional dryness of the lining and walls. If you are not sure how to do the waterproofing in the best way, consult with masters who already have experience in this work. Preparation for bathroom insulation

In order to insulate the bathroom as well as possible, good preparation is necessary. The substrate for waterproofing should be flat and clean. If there are larger dents or cracks on the floor or wall, they must be repaired with tapes that are also used for corners. Clean or vacuum the substrate well. Before applying the waterproofing, it is recommended to apply the substrate with a stabilization roller, which makes the waterproofing easier to apply. When you have prepared the base and the material for waterproofing, the application of waterproofing begins. Use a smaller brush in corners and less accessible areas, and a larger brush for larger areas. A trowel can also be used, but the consumption is slightly higher. Carefully apply the insulation over the substrate so that there are no holes that the insulation has not reached.

Problems with bad bathroom insulation

Bathroom insulationBathroom insulation The following problems can arise when the bathroom is poorly insulated or when there is no waterproofing: – Leakage through structural joints due to the use of poor quality materials or insufficient waterproofing due to improper installation, while the main source of water remains unnoticed and unattended until the leakage occurs. – Seepage through porous concrete due to poor mix design and inadequate mixing of the concrete, which in turn retains water and remains wet for longer periods of time. – Cracks in the tiles are places where water penetrates – if the tile is not placed in its place in the correct way, it loses its waterproofness over time and is damaged by daily use. – Debonding of tiles due to inadequate materials for laying tiles, improper application of materials or excessive shrinkage of the substrate due to improper mixing and insufficient drying. – Rusting of metal elements and the appearance of mold due to moisture migration and leakage, as well as the appearance of fungi and algae on the surface due to prolonged humidity and poor ventilation. – Leakage at the points of exit and entry of pipes from walls/floors and joints: Unplanned work around pipes almost always creates a free space at the points of pipe penetration, and if this space is not properly protected, water can penetrate the structure and cause serious damage. – Leakage next to the drain: Due to improper installation of the drain on the floor surface and insufficient protection around the drain, or due to insufficiently good application of waterproofing around the pipes, water can penetrate into the structure.

Maintenance of bathroom insulation

In order to prevent the appearance of water or moisture in the walls, use a waterproof tile adhesive instead of the material. Cement has a tendency to shrink, which causes tile cracking, better sound transmission, and possibly tile peeling. Avoid using harsh chemicals to remove stains or dirt from the tile to maintain its shine. Use cleaning products that are specially made for cleaning tiles and sanitary ware. Their pH level is well balanced to remove stubborn hard water and soap stains so your bathroom always looks like new.
